Metal Braces Are a Reliable Way to Correct Orthodontic Issues

If you or your child struggles with crooked teeth or an overall misaligned bite, Kids & Grownups Dental offers several orthodontic options. Metal braces from our Irving, TX, practice are a reliable and trusted treatment for patients of all ages. Using brackets and wires carefully designed for your smile, traditional braces can successfully move crooked, crowded, and gapped teeth into their proper positions. Braces can also correct more serious types of misalignment that can affect your dental function and increase your risk for developing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. Drs. John Lee and Joshua Lee will evaluate the severity of your misalignment to determine the right type of orthodontics for you. Whichever treatment you receive, you can experience an improved appearance and often dramatically enhanced oral health.

Are You a Candidate for Metal Braces?

Metal braces can be a highly successful way to treat teeth that are:

  • Crooked
  • Gapped
  • Tipped
  • Rotated
  • Overlapping

Braces can also treat malocclusion (imbalance of the upper and lower jaws) caused by these conditions.

In some cases, early interceptive treatment can reduce the severity of misalignment and shorten overall treatment time.

Braces are suitable for patients of all ages. Typically, we recommend children have most of their adult teeth before we place the appliances. In some cases, however, early interceptive treatment can reduce the severity of misalignment and shorten overall treatment time. Further, both kids and adults should have healthy teeth before they start wearing braces. If you have cavities or gum disease, we will need to address these conditions before moving forward with braces.

What to Expect When You Are Wearing Braces

Before you receive your braces, Dr. John Lee or Dr. Joshua Lee will create a custom treatment plan. Using impressions and x-rays, your dentist will determine how your teeth need to shift and the amount of pressure the braces should apply. Your practitioner will attach metal brackets to each of your teeth. Between the brackets will run a ligature wire, which will place a slight force on your dental arches. Though the pressure will be relatively mild, over time it will shift your teeth into new positions. To achieve the best results, your dentist will incrementally tighten the wire. The length of your treatment can vary based on your specific needs and how quickly your teeth move. Typically, metal braces are worn for 18 months to two years. In some cases, children’s orthodontia may be slightly faster. Once the braces come off, you will need to wear a retainer to maintain the results.

While you are wearing braces, it is vital that you take care of them and of your teeth. The brackets and wires can easily trap food and bacteria, increasing your risk for decay and stains. Therefore, thorough hygiene and a proper diet are essential. Avoid foods with small particles, such as popcorn, nuts, and seeds, as these are more likely to become trapped in your braces. Chewing gum, whole fruits, and other very hard or sticky foods can damage your appliance. At your consultation and follow-ups, we will teach you the most effective ways to brush and floss while wearing your braces.

Metal Braces vs. Other Treatment Options

In addition to metal braces, we also offer Fastbraces® and MTM® Clear Aligners. These treatments work more quickly than standard braces. Plus, MTM Clear Aligners are virtually invisible. Therefore, they can be a great option for adults and older teens who may feel self-conscious about wearing traditional brackets and wires. These treatments are primarily designed for cosmetic issues and less serious types of misalignment. Accordingly, if you or your child are struggling with severe malocclusion, metal braces are most likely a better option. Furthermore, MTM Clear Aligners are removable and must be changed about every two weeks. Because they require patients to take extra care not to lose their removable aligners, they may not be right for children and younger teens.
